Government regulation of bread prices could have a negative impact on both producers and consumers, according to Alexey Tulupov, owner of «Kolomensky» bakery holding. In an interview with RBC, he explained that bakeries already have low profit margins, and if the government introduces additional restrictions, many businesses risk running losses or closing altogether.
«If direct regulation starts, some producers simply won't survive,» Tulupov notes. «Even with efficient production like ours, profitability is still low. Who needs bankruptcies? It won't benefit the industry or the consumers».
«Narreznoy» and «Darnitsky» loaves are already on the list of socially important goods monitored by the state. According to Tulupov, new regulations would add more risks. Entrepreneurs would look for ways around the rules: «If prices are capped, familiar loaves may quickly disappear from shelves, replaced by new varieties that aren't subject to regulation».
